I am totally re-designing my garden should I be getting professionals on board as advisors or just jump right in and do it all myself?
I'm by no means a gardening expert but figure with the countless number of online resources out there it can't be too hard.
What have other people's approaches to DIY projects been and how did your project turn out?

The key to a pleasant makeover experience is good planning and sound advice. You can still do a lot of the hard yakka yourself and get some good ideas from the TV or online but it pays to get professional guidance as well. Professionals will help you shape your ideas to your environment and you’ll avoid the heartache of inappropriate concepts that look like, well… you wish they were in someone else’s house.

Daveyd,
I would reccomend getting the professionals involved at some point. If you are designing a new garden it would probably be best to seek out the horticulturalist at the local garden centre and talk to a plumber about the installation of your drip irrigation system, that's what I did!
The plumber will think of things you mightn’t, like the complexities of water pressure, how to get water up hill on steeply sloping sites and how to avoid knocking sounds in the pipes when the tap switches off etc

| When making your decision take into mind that one day’s work for a professional on average equals five days for an amateur, so their advice is likely to save you both time and money!

No harm in trying to DIY, you can always just call the professionals in later if you stuff it up

If it's just your garden that you are doing, I'd be inclined to do it yourself. Surely there's not too much that could go wrong with a garden.
Ripping out walls etc in your house would be a different story...
