Thinking of buying an old Landy (Rover, not Cruiser - sorry but i'm a purist) to do some off-roading.

Two questions:

1. Are there any places that you can go to and practice and get some tuition? If so, where is recommended.

2. Where's good to acutally go offroad?

Lerderderg State Park and Wombat State Forest are supposed to be pretty good. I have a few friends that go down there regulary... I'm not sure exactly where it is, but I know its less then an hour or so from Melbourne.

When I first moved to Melbourne 12 yrs ago I bought an old Landy - a Series III 79 ex-army radio truck. Slept in the back and had so much fun - joined a club and have been an avid 4WDer ever since.

Try the Landrover Owners Club which is one of the bigger clubs in Victoria, they can also give advice on what to buy and run plenty of trips. Also Four Wheel Drive Victoria (formerly Victoria Assn of 4WD Clubs) is a good place to investigate training as they have a driver training unit with qualified instructors. You can google them both to find their websites.

Another benefit of joining a club is that if you get stuck you have people to help you out. No fun getting stuck and being on your own in the bush!
