I just read the latest numbers are 5000 homeless, 150 killed and expected to rise. People are going to need places to stay. I had an idea that perhaps people can start posting here if they can accommodate or assist victims of the bushfires.

Craigslist.org in the U.S. did a similar thing for Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans 2005. HurricaneHousing.org and KatrinaHousing.org are the only two remnants left, there are good things there to make a template if anyone wants to make an organized website.

ABC started a great thing at

http://blogs.abc.net.au/victoria/2009/02/offer-help---or.html

but now they have closed off comments and no one else can post.

This Trading Post website should hopefully be able to handle more posts. If you can host people in your home or property, leave your details here. How many people, children/ elderly okay, can you accommodate pets or livestock or horses, and any miscellaneous details like how long are you willing to accommodate people for, what facilities you have available.

And how best to get in contact with you, email or phone numbers.

(And, most importantly, tell people about this post because otherwise without a critical mass it's useless.)

*hugs* I was living in Melbourne last year and though I'm no longer there I'm still heart sore for whats happening and I hope this can help.

I am from Canberra, and went through the horrific 2003 fires here. I know it's a long way to come from Victoria, but can also understand some people might just want to drop everything and get away, so I can offer one double futon and one queen bed, two young kids to play with, meals, showers, etc. yard suitable for 1-2 small-med dogs. ~email shampagne99@hotmail.com

Hi everyone,

I noticed people are still viewing this so I'm posting that there is a dedicated hotline 1800 006 468 now set up by DHS for people who want to offer accommodation:

www.dhs.vic.gov.au/emergency/current-events/bushfire/advice-...

Donation of accommodation:
People wishing to donate accommodation should contact the Victorian Bushfire Public Accommodation Donation Line by calling 1800 006 468. 8am - 8pm.

Thanks!

Other ways to help, these two great websites:
