Does anyone know what the regulations are about building a deck? Do you need a permit, or does it depend on size or which council you are located in?

generally no. However if it costs over $5000, yes... but u can say it costs $4999.00 if they ever asked, so u can avoid the permit.

However, keep it 1m away from your boundry/neighbour. in case it catch fire it doesnt burn down ur neighbours house.

Hi octagonal,

I'd suggest you speak to your local council.
As I understand it, every council has it's own rules for construction and permit requirements.

As an example of the sorts of rules; I'd suggest you take a look at the following pages:

http://www.casey.vic.gov.au/buildingpermits/article.asp?Item=5427

http://www.wellington.vic.gov.au/page/page.asp?page_id=1098

As you can see, both of these councils require you to obtain a permit before building commences. It may be different in your area or state, but it would be better to check first.

Good luck,
Bruce
