I just started a new business and have a website on the way and want to ensure it gets as much traffic as possible.

What are some methods for promoting your website besides the usual networking, word of mouth and talking to people online type promotion?

Getting Found by customers

Hi ffc1976

Here are some useful tips for you to get positioned

1. Make sure your website is hosted in its own domain name and not in a free website or geocity type hosting. Not having your own domain name really hampers your position potential. The name needs to be relevant to your business.

2. Your website has to be designed correctly and compliant with the Internet codes

3. You need to research what keywords are important for your business and how many people use them while searching so you know how many potential customers you can get.

4. Make the content useful and relevant.

All these tips are more important than how many links in directories you may have, because 200 links to a poorly written website without the correct keywords will not be found by buying customers.

In fact to get any decent value from linking you have to get hundreds of links from quality websites.

Focus on submitting to search engines by going to their home pages and looking for 'add url' or 'submit sites' options. Then follow the instructions.

Warm Regards

Hi ffc1976,

I'm in the same situation as you were. I have just started a home business and am looking for ways to promote my site.

I have a registered domain name which i believe helps (from the other post here).

I am also looking into Google Ad Words (not exactly sure what to do, but google the term google ad words and do some research on it).

I have also got several Social Networking sites I have been using for years now personally, so i have put all my business websites and advertising on their.

Another new form of getting people to look at your website, but will require a little bit of constant work (updating information) is Twitter. You only have a small amount of space to post a comment, but it is enough to post a little bit about your business and a website address. The trick to using Twitter is to write interesting updates that are useful or inspiring to others, then you will gain a 'following' of people which in turn can lead to other people checking your Twitter site, which in turn (if you have something worthy of looking at) can lead to people looking at your site.

It's not going to get you a million leads, but it is another way of getting your site out there to the abundance of people who are on the internet daily.

Hope this helps...even a little.

To your success!

Susan Graham
