Yeah sounds to me like you might be using a normal network cable rather than a cross over cable. Crossover cables (I believe are normally yellow in colour) have two of the internal wires swapped around at either end which has the effect of imitating the network going through a hub. If you have already gone to the expense of buying a cable and you realise that it's not a cross over cable you can also buy a cross over adaptor which goes on one end of the cabe, doesn't matter which end. Most of the larger type computer stores and Harvey Norman, Dick Smith should have these or try shopbot.com.au. Ohhh Shopbot.com.au my wife hates me going there but my credit card company loves it , hehehehe. Hope this helps.

Depends on what you want to achieve.

The most simple and cost effective way would be a cat-5 Crossover cable connection the 2 laptops. Next you can get a switch(hub) for around $15, more space for connecting more computers in the future. Or you can get a modem with build in router with switch(hub), this way both laptops can be connected to the internet at the same time. I would suggest get one with a wireless capability, this way you can use it around the house without wires.

Can you take photos of each end of the cable ? (Wire / Metal teeth side up).

There is a chance that the cable is not a cross-over cable, and for a PC / Laptop PC / Laptop connection you'll most likely want a 'cat5e cross-over' cable (or better).

With a 'straight through' (a non cross-over cable, usually blue or black plastic in colour) it might work (advances in technology made it more automatic, but not all systems, especially laptops, sport such 'seamless and automatic' networking features).

Note: Your Start Menu interface may differ slightly, May need to use Start, All Programs, Programs, or something similar. But this is the gist.

I might hang around these forums more often, to get a better idea of 'typical consumer' knowledge, experience & skillsets. After several years in IT it becomes easy to forget about 'normal peoople'.

You shouldn't need to run the XP Disk.
I haven't done the process in a while and I'm not at home at the moment. But tonite I'll run the process and post up a step-by-step guide if you wish.

Simple question for those that know.
I have two laptops and just purchased a network cable.
Both laptops run xp so I ran the wizard.
I was sorta stumped on the part where I got too many choices lol.
Do I have to put in an xp disK?
I only have recovery disks.
Andbody done it enough times to give me step by step destructions?
I would greatly appreciate it
