An excellent idea to both combat the over use of Petrol and provide financial releif to those that really need it.

Not much the government could do if they choose not to waive the excise or gst on Petrol. But this is an excellent alternative.

Every private owner may now fit their petrol guzzlers with LPG and have the cost rebated to them by the government.

The conditions and information on this procedure are somewhat hard to find out. I myself, have rang and booked one of my cars in to have the conversion done.

The conditions of the rebate , I was told are as follows:

The Vehicle must be registered to a private individual
You may only apply for one rebate of $2000 each and every 3 years.
You must pay for the work to be done and then take the compliance certificate and the receipt of payment to Centrelink to have your rebate allocated to you in around 4 days.

Seems grossly unfair that it is only available to private individuals and not Company or fleet vehicles, considering they do high kms.

The waiting list for fitouts has blown out from a few weeks to a few months.

Great for the economy, in that it creates more jobs for the industry.

I have found that the cost of the conversions has gone up by about 30% at most of the outlets that I contacted.

Does anybody have anymore information on this ???

Just watch the taxes on the price of LPG at the pump go through the roof in the next couple of years.

My understanding of why it is cheaper at the moment is basically because it doesn't have as much tax on it as petrol.

The government won't be able to stop themselves from getting their hands on some new revenue streams as soon as they see thousands more people buying LPG.

Yep, the government, will want to at least reclaim their $2000 lol.
They cannot help themselves, once the market share is large enough then I'm positive they will introduce more ways to raise revenue.

I have heard that in 2012, there will be a NEW road tax on LPG of 16.5c per litres. You can be sure that it will then be indexed to the cpi and so on , the same as petrol.

Still its a welcome relief however short lived for the crippling prices that we are now feeling.

I had my 97 Fairlane converted to LPG 10 months ago by bloke in fairfield hights(sydney). From the day i spoke to him for a quote,I booked it it in the folownig tuesday and it was completed the next day wednesday.Dont be conned in believing there is a 6 -12 month wait. They actually have second hand gas tanks that they re-test,re-spray in grey colour and place a new compliance plate on it for 10yrs.All up it cost me $1700 to do the conversion, now its naturally gone up(i was there for a pink slip 2 weeks ago,and i asked a fellow motorist who was there having his car converted,he said it s costing him $2500.
The only bad thing about LPG is that once everyone has jumped on board and is using gas the govenment will naturall lift its prices to re-coup its grant of $2000,caus nothings free.
thanxs

If you have been sold a "New LPG UNIT" which is actually a secondhand one, then you are entitled to take it back and request a "NEW" one.
Secondhand tanks cannot be reused for 10 years and can only be restamped for 5 years at a time.

How the Rebate works....

Best thing to do is ring around for a quote. I have found since the initial rebate system, you will find conversions have gone up about 20 - 30%.

Once you have found a fitter that suits your needs,
Book your car in. You may wait anywhere from 14 days to 3 months depending on many factors like, type of car, system required etc.

Once the job is completed and paid for, usually back in 24 hours, you take the certificate supplied by the LPG fitter to Centrelink along with your registration papers and complete a very simple form and lodge it there.

They will then refund you your $2000.

However they do discriminate.....
Only one rebate per person, per 3 years.
You will be required to complete a declaration that the vehicle is used for private purposes only.
No business vehicles are entitled.
I suppose they can be declared private on that day, and converted to business use the next day

You can nominate for the payment to go direct into your account.

I know it's a little later than your chat, but this is the official website for the LPG Rebate:

Hope this helps!
