Ive been looking on the Trading Post for a second hand surfboard. The problem is there are too many and I'm not sure what I should be looking for.

I'm new to surfing and until now have been using a mates board (a malibu with the nickname Queen Mary, because it's so big it takes for ever to turn).

I had been thinking of going a bit smaller, maybe getting a mini mal, but as a beginner is this the right thing to do?

Goofy Footer,
I got back on a board last Year for the first time since I was 18. I'm now slightly older, wiser & heavier. So I bought a mini mal from Mooloolaba boards. Great board for my skill level (rank) and size (largeish). 6' 9".

Recommend.

My suggestion is to hire a few, see what suits you. Depending on how your skill level is and your weight will vary on the board that suits you. I have found bigger the better to maximise wave numbers caught.
PS Stay off my break dude!
