a few months ago my girlfriend drove over some paint that had spilled on the road, and didn't get it washed off immediately.

can someone recommend a product and/or method for removing this paint without removing the metallic paintwork of the car.

Well the paint will be really dry now. I would sand it off with 1500 grit wet & dry sand paper then buff or polish the panel.
